Having spent many years fishing Cuba, Los Roques and the Bahamas, this year I finally gave Belize a try. My permit obsession as well as my love for flats fishing in general were well and truly taken care of! I never imagined seeing so many schools of Permit. And Permit of all sizes.

These were on the lagoon flats of the inner atoll, but added to this there’s so much good external flats of sand and coral with schools of tailing bonefish and permit in smaller groups and singles. This is the best place to go to offer a more than reasonable chance of hooking a permit.

I’ve carefully chosen to return in June, on a new moon week with good tides, to take advantage of their peak season which gives opportunity for huge Tarpon. Every year here there seems to be lots over 100lbs caught as well as a handful of fish between 120 and 150.

Huge migratory Tarpon, Permit in numbers you cannot believe, and tailing bonefish on wadeable, oceanside flats. Also, as much reef fishing as you could wish for around this beautiful atoll. This will be the highlight of my fishing calendar next year I’m sure.
