Fishing for Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit

MANGO CREEK LODGE, HONDURAS
16-27 April 2010
Host Gavin Hodgson
     PRICE £2600 inc flights

Honduras is a place I’ve thought about for some time and finally managed to secure a good tide and moon week during April 2010 for flatsfishing Permit, Bonefish and Snook, as well as Tarpon up to around 50lb. Roatan island offers a unique combination of plentiful, healthy flats beneath a backdrop of lush, mountainous terrain.

This is a great value trip, and as a lodge with only the capacity for 6 fishermen per week it offers exclusive opportunity to boat and wade fish the shores and flats with your local guide. You’ll be fishing the turtle grass flats of Roatan’s East End as well as the nearby islands of Morat, Barbarette, and the Pigeon Cays. Primary targets are the saltwater “grand slam” species but Spin Fishing in the channels is excellent too.

This area has been written about and had great praise for many years with a select group of American anglers. Mango Creek lodge has earned it’s reputation as a laid back but well organised lodge in a beautiful setting, with accommodation right over the waterfront. One client has described it as ‘Not a world class fishery for any one of the flats species, but a great place to catch them all’.

Fishing is close to the lodge and nearby islands of Morat, Barbvarette and Pigeon Cay. Bonefish, tarpon and Permit are the main species in numbers, but you will also find Barracuda and Snook, as well as a few other flats species local to this area. Spinning the channels and drop offs can also be productive. Bonefish average 3-5 lbs although there are good numbers in the 8-10 lbs range. The lodge has great success in fishermen hooking and landing permit and the best time is between February and July. They are most aggressive during March and April, on the run up to spawning season.
