ICELANDIC SALMON FISHING

A mere three hours flight from London lies the striking volcanic island of Iceland, home to some of the finest Atlantic salmon fishing available. With a deep rooted history of fishing and a 60,000 strong avid angling population mean that the Icelandic salmon rivers remain well managed and subsequently hugely prolific.

Its rivers cater in every aspect for the discerning angler. Whether one prefers using traditional Spey rods and long casts into heavy flows probing far flung lies with tube flies, to those who prefer the stealth and skill required to tempt fish from the narrow crystal clear streams using single handed rods and hitched flies. Iceland has it all.

Rivers such as the Nordurá, Grimsá and Laxá I Kjós host huge grilse runs and July and August sees the spectacular variety of pools teeming with fish fresh from the tide. The northern rivers such as the Laxá I Adaldal and Fnjóská are home to much larger fish and require competent waders and casters in style more akin to Scottish salmon fishing.

Universal is the high standard of accommodation in the lodges often positioned with stunning views of the Laxfoss, pools synonymous with most of the major rivers. Gourmet food and surroundings cater for parties and individuals alike, whilst the prevalence of expert guides ensure novices and fishers new to the Icelandic style of fishing are instructed to the best of their ability.

For those fishers who have 'been and done' Russia and have at times been disheartened by the unreliability of Scottish salmon runs, Iceland presents a very attractive alternative. The ease of getting there, the huge variety of rivers and styles of fishing and abundance of non fishing activities can appeal to those of us with busy lifestyles wishing to wet a line for a few days and take the family along also.

Reykjavik itself is a stunning city, typically clean and refreshingly Norse and is home to a hub of vibrant restaurants and bars. The city itself has a prolific river flowing through the centre – a true indicator of a country proud of its fishing heritage and management.
