A trip to Cuba's Isle of Youth
19th June - 28th June 2009

A small party on the Perola for flats fishing around the Isle of Youth.

Said to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island', Isla de la Juventud is steeped in history and tradition. The reports from last season by the experienced guides from Jardines de la Reina and clients who visited are very exciting, with tales of big tarpon, large bonefish and good numbers of permit. The tarpon fishing especially has proved to be fantastic, with a number of fish over 100lbs landed.

La Perola will anchor between Cayo Aguardiente Cayo Rosario and Cantiles so you will be targeting that extremely productive area. The plan is to be at that spot at sunrise and at sundown, when the clients at El Rancho are still or already at the dock!! This will offer the best fishing any time of day, and allow more flexibility. The large area of Marine Park accessed from Isla de la Juventud contains large bonefish, and good numbers of tarpon and permit. The environment is similar to that of Jardinas de la Reina with a combination of hard coral, turtle grass and mangroves providing a perfect environment for stalking on foot or from a skiff.

The guides live aboard La Perola along with the guests, and having the flexibility to travel around this huge island system in order to find the absolute best fishing is a key to the Perola. Fishing will be parties of six from three skiffs.

La Perola

The operation will be based from the 75-foot luxury live aboard, La Perola, the best way to experience the full immersion fishing in the Canarreos Archipelago.

There are five air-conditioned cabins below deck, beautifully paneled in timber, and each room individually decorated. Shared between them are three bathrooms, each with a decent shower and plenty of hot water to wash the salt off at the end of the day. On the top deck there is a large air-conditioned sitting room where clients often congregate for a pre dinner drink, before descending to the second deck for an open air dinner.

The chef on La Perola does a wonderful job with the food. Dinners are primarily seafood; fresh fish every day, lobster and conch. For those that prefer something different, chicken and pork are also available, served in conjunction with salads and a variety of fruits. You will be lulled to sleep by the gentle lapping of the waves before starting fresh the next morning to continue your exploration of the Archipelago.
