Jason Bowen has the taste for fresh run Sea Trout from the Rio Irigoyen River, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.
February 2009

After a comfortable haul and an overnight stay in Buenos Aires we arrived at the Far End Rivers lodge and greeted with a warm welcome. Considering the lodge is at the southernmost tip of South America it was extremely comfortable, accommodating up to six anglers with log burners in the cabins. Meals are served in a separate cabin with sofas and a well stocked bar to tell tales of the days success. Being mid season I was hoping for a fantastic week and was not let down. The average size of these acrobatic silvers was between 8-12lbs however I landed a few in excess of 15lbs.

In some pools we fished there was no room for mistakes, if you give these bruisers room to run too far, they will find debris and break you. The fight was on and realised the 16lb leader I was using wasn’t strong enough and switched to 24lb Seaguar. We were transferred from pool to pool using six wheeled amphibious vehicles. What these machines can do and get through is quite amazing.

Even though I work at Grangers I was happy for my guide ‘Ali’ to check my lines, knots and flies. It’s always good to get the thumbs up from the experts on their own turf and then the blame lies on them if the big one gets away! My weapon of choice was a Sage TCX 9’ #8, Waterworks ULA 3.3 loaded with 275 yards of Gelspun and the Rio Versitip line. I tested the new Hardy Angel2 9’6 #7 and whilst the action was superb I wish I had the 9’ model for these conditions. Next time.

The flies I used ranged in sizes 4-14 for different water conditions and time of day. Day time flies used were Wonder Bugs, Stonefly Nymphs, Woolly Buggers, Mini Templedog Silver Stoat and at night were Bunny Blenny, Articulated Leech and a Steel Tooka black/chartreuse.

I would like to thank Nick Palliser from the Latin American Fishing Co for arranging this week and to all the staff involved in making it a hassle free and wonderful experience. I shall be hosting a week in 2010, if you are interested or have any questions regarding this river please feel free to contact me at Grangers. 020 7584 9666.
